Irvine, Orange County - UC Irvine graduate student Brian Benedict has been arrested for the murder of his ex-wife, Rebecca Benedict. She was shot to death outside Benedict's on-campus housing this past Sunday.
The couple was in the midst of divorce proceedings and share joint custody of their 4 year old son. The couple got into an argument on Sunday when Rebecca was trying to pick up her son. As Rebecca was walking back toward the parking lot, Brian Benedict walked out with a handgun and shot at Rebecca. Police arrived very quickly after the shootings and arrested Benedict. His ex-wife was taken to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Murder is an extremely serious charge and is defined by the California Penal Code ยง187 as the "unlawful killing of a human being, or fetus, with malice aforethought (premeditation)."
